SBC Group Leaders needed!

·
As many of you are planning your summers, I wanted to offer you a fun opportunity to get involved with kids, while taking advantage of FREE childcare.  Our Summer Bible Camp needs Group Leaders, and I'm hoping some of you will volunteer.  Your kids who are entering 1st -6th grade can attend the camp, and any younger kids can come to a "mini camp" experience at church with me.
Here is more info from Nathan about Group Leaders:

What is a group leader?
A group leader is an adult who leads a group of 7 to 10 kids during Summer Bible Camp.  As a group leader you will stay with the same group of kids throughout the entire week and help them participate in the various activities of Summer Bible Camp?
·         Who can be a group leader?
Anyone who has put their faith in Jesus and has a desire to work with and lead kids!  Must also be willing to submit to a background check.
·         What does a group leader do?
A group leader serves as a great example of what a good participant in Summer Bible Camp looks like.  They encourage the children in their group to play the games, they help them with their crafts, they sing and get excited about worship, they help them listen and focus during the Bible and story time.  They also lead a 10 minute small group discussion on the day’s Bible teaching and theme.
·         Why should I be a group leader?
Because you get to spend a week playing with kids and helping them learn about who God is and what he’s done for them!
·         When is Summer Bible Camp?
Summer Bible Camp is July 6-10, 2015.  It is from 9 AM to 12 PM.  As a group leader you are expected to be there from 8:45 AM to 12:15 PM.
·         How do I sign up to be a group leader?

Contact Nathan Wagner by email Nathan@northcreekpres.org or call him at the church (425) 743-2386
How does childcare work?
Any children, ages baby to entering Kindergarten in the fall, can be dropped off at the church starting at 8:30am.  Kids entering 1st through 6th grade can be signed up for camp AND if you have older kids, they can volunteer too!
Childcare is free, and the kids at church will have their own "mini camp" experience, with crafts, stories, songs, and outdoor activities.  Please let Nathan know when you sign up that you need childcare.

Thank you!

News from the Children's Ministry

Greetings!

I want to begin by inviting each of you to strongly consider attending the annual meeting Sunday, Jan 26th at 5pm. This is an important time for us to gather as a congregation to explore where God is leading us for the next year. Typically there have not been a lot of families with children in attendance at this meeting. We hope to change that this year because you are a very valuable part of our community! We have some exciting things planned for the meeting, childcare available for younger children, and a potluck dinner for everyone following the meeting. Let me know if you have any questions. I hope to see you there!

Communion Class- February 9th 11:00am-1:00pm
Would you like your children to learn more about communion? Sign up for this class at https://northcreek.smartevents.com/communion-class. We have activity packets available at the registration desk for families planning to participate in the class. There are four activities for your family to do in preparation for our class on Feb. 9th.

Family Seminary-February 9th
You are invited to join us as we welcome Dr. Jeffrey Keuss to present at Family Seminary, February 9.  Dr. Keuss is presenting his forthcoming book: Blur: A New Paradigm for Understanding Youth Culture.  Additional information and online registration available on the northcreekpres.org/familyseminary.

Lent Prep Party-March 2nd
Our Advent Prep Party was so well attended, we are doing it again for Lent! Mark your calendars for Saturday March 1st. We will gather from 5:00-7:00pm for pizza dinner, a Lent activity (a special option will be available to accommodate families with young children), and a special Taize service at the end. More information to come!

As always, please contact me with questions/comments.

Blessings to you!

Proverbs for Mothers

I was looking for an inspirational quote to feature on our Facebook page, and I came across this passage in Proverbs.  I couldn't fit the whole quote into a cover photo, but I had to share it!

I find it fascinating that although it has been centuries since this was written, so much for a wife/mom is still the same!

Enjoy!

Proverbs 31: 10-31

Epilogue: The Wife of Noble Character
10bA wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
11Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
12She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
13She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands.
14She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.
15She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her female servants.
16She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
18She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
19In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.
21When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
24She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
26She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
27She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
29“Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
30Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

Playdate, anyone?

2003 Flashback!

I was flipping through an old "Parenting" magazine from 2003, looking for photos of smiling babies for a wall poster I'm working on...if you're curious, stop by the Nursery this Sunday!  I (should) have it finished by then.

Anyway, amongst the "Baby Einstein" and Boppy ads, there were some real gems that I thought were worth sharing.

Enjoy!

5 signs you need to get out more

1. You don't know a single song on MTV's Video Music Awards...

2. ...and yet you can sing all the words to "Elmo's Song," "The Wheels on the Bus," and "Puff the Magic Dragon."

3. You realize that the best birthday present you can get is an uninterrupted bath and a clean kitchen after breakfast.

4. You find yourself glued to the Dora the Explorer Pirate Adventure video long after your kids have left the room.

5. You publicly drink from a juice box.

5 special perks of motherhood

1. You have an excuse for keeping Cap'n Crunch in the house.

2. You alwars have a handy reason to get off the phone-dirty diaper, tantrum, you name it.

3.  You can watch all those films you used to love, like Bambi.\

4.  You can finally stash that ugly vase/picture frame/candy dish your mother-in-law/sister/friend game you.  (After all, you wouldn't want the baby to break it!)

5. There's always someone who thinks you're the most beautiful person in the world.

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.   -- Ephesians 2:10

Announcement from NCPC

Attention Singers!

The choir is preparing for the new season. Rehearsals are held weekly (with occasional breaks) on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00 beginning September 4th, and we will sing in worship beginning Sunday, September 8th. If you have ever thought about joining the choir, now is the best time. Singers of all ranges are welcomed; Tenors and Basses are especially cherished by our choir family. From the first rehearsal, time will be devoted to begin learning our new Christmas cantata, Appalachian Winter, by Joseph Martin with traditional and original music cleverly arranged in a Celtic style. For more information, contact Hal Hunt at 425-412-3970

Attention Parents who are also Singers!  Did you know that childcare is available during choir rehearsal?  If you join the choir, and need childcare, just let Molly Pankow know!

Becoming Beloved

A message from our Children's Ministry Director:

Greetings!

As I get questions about the Becoming Beloved experience this summer I realize that the details of the program may not be totally clear. I have attached a information sheet to provide you more information about why we are doing this and what it will look like.

A few things to note:

-          All ages from birth-adult are invited and encouraged to participate in the event

-          Children going into 6th grade and under are to be registered with a parent, grandparent, or another adult. These children/adults will be placed in groups together. If you have children who want to attend, but are unable to have a parent or another adult attend with them due to conflicting schedules, please let me know. I will hook them up with another family!

-          Youth going into 7th grade and above will be place in groups separate than their families, unless they want to participate with their families.

After reading through the information sheet please let me know if you have any more questions!

Becoming Beloved

In our fast paced world, we don’t often take time to think about the fact that God chose each one of us to be uniquely beloved. Becoming Beloved is an opportunity to do that as our community will come together to affirm and bless one another. Henri Nouwen’s Book "Life of the Beloved: Spiritual Living in a Secular World" provides a beautiful picture of what it looks like to live into our belovedness and provides a guide to the program. As we move through the program "[Our] only desire is to make these words reverberate in every corner of your being-‘You are the Beloved.’"

Why intergenerational?

We spend a lot of our time at church segregated by age. Children attend Sunday school classes, teenagers have special classes and programs, even our adult programs are often divided by different generations. While those opportunities are important, we can learn and grow so much by time spent together. Children need caring adult role models to help guide their faith development and adults benefit from children’s unique ways of viewing God and the world. This summer provides the perfect opportunity to do that! This program is the alternative to a regular Summer Bible Camp where the focus is on children learning about God through play, song, and story. Becoming Beloved in designed so children, youth, and adults will experience God through play, song, and story with one another.

Beloved Groups…

Participants will be placed in Beloved groups which are small groups consisting of 10-12 people. Children 6th grade and under will be placed in groups with their parents, grandparents, or other caregivers. Couples will also be placed in groups with one another. The groups will consist of people from a variety of life situations, young families with kids, young adults, teenagers, couples, singles, seniors, etc.

The Schedule…

Wednesday July 24th to Friday July 26th

6:00-6:20- Large group worship

6:25-7:05- ½ of the Beloved Groups have their group time while ½ of the groups gather for special activities

7:05-7:45- Groups switch

7:50-8:00- Closing large group worship

Beloved Group time will consist of: Ice breaker games, an ongoing group art activity, discussion, and dessert

Special activities will include: prayer stations, nature walks, large group games and more

Saturday July 27th

We will have several options for Beloved groups to visit a local organization to serve the morning of July 27th. Saturday will end with a large church picnic lunch and celebration at a local park.

Becoming Beloved- Intergenerational Summer Bible Camp

I hope your family will consider participating in our exciting Summer Bible Camp opportunity this summer. All ages will gather together to worship, play, and share in life together all based on the theme Becoming Beloved. Parents and grandparents get to join in the SBC fun this summer as we gather July 24th-27th. We will meet Wednesday-Friday from 6:00-8:00pm and end Saturday with morning service projects and an all church picnic celebration.

April and May

In April, our children were reading a story called, "New Life in Jesus", which uses a butterfly to illustrate the resurrection.

I hope you enjoyed the butterfly crafts and coloring pages.  This spring, if you see a butterfly, remind your child that butterflies remind us of Jesus!

In May, our two year olds will be learning about prayer, with a special craft celebrating mother's on May 12th, Mother's Day!

"Whoever is a believer in Christ is a new creation. The old way of living has disappeared. A new way of living has come into existence." 2 Corinthians 5:17

The Advent Season

Today is the first Sunday of Advent, a season of waiting in anticipation!

In our newly expanded 2-3 classroom, we will be learning the story of the birth of Christ, with books, songs, finger plays, and a special present opening activity.

Each week, the kids will be making an ornament to take home, that illustrates part of the Christmas story.  If you miss a week, please let me know, and I will give you a kit to assemble at home!

And as one of my favorite Christmas carols says:

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
Our troubles will be out of sight

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
Our troubles will be miles away.

Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself A merry little Christmas now.

Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself A merry little Christmas now.

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:14

Donations needed for MOPS/Mary's Place

Hello Moms,

Our NCPC MOPS groups is having a  fundraiser with the Just Between Friends Consignment Sale happening in Mill Creek Friday December 7th, and Saturday December 8th. The sale will be held at the Gold Creek Community Church in Mill Creek at 4326 148th street Southeast (just off Seattle Hill road). The website for the sale is http://www.lynnwood.jbfsale.com/.

For those of you not familiar with Just Between Friends (JBF) they are a national organization who host large scale consignment sales across the country multiple times a year. At these events, consignors bring their new and gently-used children's and maternity merchandise to sell. Shoppers can then browse and purchase these items at great savings, usually far below retail prices. Consignors set their price for the items they are selling and then make 60-70% of what they sell. Consignors can choose to get items back that don't sell, or the organization donates the items to local charities. You can look up their national site at www.jbfsales.com .

The upcoming Mill Creek Sale is a bit unique in that it is a Toy and Baby Equipment Sale only. Just in time for the holidays. I have been in contact with the organizer and as we are a non profit organization, she will compensate us 80% of what we sell. We in exchange have to provide 2-4 volunteers to work a combined total of 8 hours at the sale.

What we need from our families are a good supply of gently used (and working) toys and baby equipment that your kids (and more likely you moms) are open to parting with. This is just in time for clearing out space in preparation for the influx of items that may be coming at Christmas. You can bring your donations to Brooke Yule's house any time, just call Brooke at  206-795-1504 or email her at beyule@earthlink.net
We can store the items in my garage and my husband and I will drop off the items at the Sale Set up between December 2nd and December 5th. Any items not sold, we will pick up and donate to Mary's Place, our MOPS outreach organization.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with your families. We all have much to be thankful for.
Blessings!

A word about LICE

A Note from your classroom about ……. LICE!

A child in our Nursery has been exposed to lice.  The classroom has been cleaned and disinfected, but you should check your child for lice, in case there was any direct head to head contact.

Itchy, scratchy, creepy, crawly. It’s unsettling to have these creatures take up residence in your

family, but it’s important to remember a few facts about lice: Lice can’t jump or fly from head to

head; You can’t catch lice from your pet; Lice don’t spread disease; Lice like clean hair just as

much as dirty hair; 6 – 12 million people get head lice every year.

Lice are tiny insects that live in human hair. They are about the size of a sesame seed and have

light and dark areas on their bodies that help them blend into hair. Their eggs, called nits, are even

smaller and attach themselves to hair strands with very strong glue. About 12 days after the nits

hatch, they can lay up to 10 eggs a day till they die at about 28 days.

Lice are most frequently spread from direct head to head contact and sometimes through shared combs or hats. Most often, “outbreaks” of lice occur after close head to head contact such as during sleepovers. Lice generally won’t live more than 24 hours off a human head and usually

cannot lay eggs if they are off the head.

INSPECT FOR LICE: To check for lice, use a magnifying glass in bright light or sunlight. Inspect

the hair in layers especially above the ears and the back of the neck where lice like to live. Look for

lice on the scalp and the “sesame seed” nits attached to hair. Sometimes hairspray, dandruff or dirt

look like lice or nits, but they can be flicked out of the hair easily. Nits are firmly attached and feel

like tiny grains of sand stuck to the hair. Nits that are more than ¼ inch from the scalp are generally

empty eggs or dead.

TREATING LICE: Pesticides to get rid of lice have serious side effects. Some have not been tested

for safety on children. People with cuts or sores on their scalp should not use pesticides. Pregnant

or nursing mothers, children under two and people with chronic health conditions should NOT use

pesticides to remove lice. Sometimes pesticides don’t work as lice are immune to them.

An immobilizing gel or inexpensive hair conditioner which keeps the lice from moving about on the

head combined with daily combing using a metal, fine toothed comb is the safest and most

effective way to remove lice. Combing and nitpicking daily for three weeks will prevent nits from

hatching and re-infesting the head with lice. Good effects have been shown from drying the hair

with a hair dryer at a comfortable temperature for 30 minutes which kills up to 88% of lice and nits.

Researchers feel the dry air is what kills the lice more than the heat. DO NOT use hairdryers with

head lice shampoos as the shampoos are flammable.

LICE PREVENTION: To prevent lice infestations, Avoid head-to-head (hair-to-hair) contact. Do not

share clothing such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, hair ribbons, or barrettes. Girls may

want to put their hair back in ponytails or braids. Using pesticides cannot prevent future lice

outbreaks. Parents should periodically check their children’s scalp for lice and nits and especially

with excessive head scratching.
